Does compostable packaging actually break down fully in compost?
Confused by all the different labels and certifications?
Ever felt that compostable packaging might just be greenwashing?

Hear all about it from Compost Manager and zero waste researcher and advocate, Liam Prince, live and on-site from the Kaicycle Urban Farm where he works. Liam will talk through Kaicycle’s composting process, how it supports healthy soil, healthy food and healthy people, and the reasons why Kaicycle has stopped accepting all types of compostable packaging.

This wānanga was held as part of #plasticfreejuly2023 and the Break Free From Plastic Asia-Pacific campaign #FalseSolutionsExposed: Busting Myths and Unveiling False Solutions to Plastic Pollution.

Earlier this year, the Aotearoa Plastic Pollution Alliance has teamed up with the Indonesian Forum for Living Environment (Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia, WALHI) to co-convene Break Free From Plastic’s False Solutions Working Group for the Asia-Pacific region from September 2022 – March 2023.

This Working Group has been developed to help facilitate collective action across our region in response to the many false solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis that are perpetuated by industry, governments, and other influential parties.

The false solutions of concern to our member organisations include (but are not limited to):

  • Incineration and waste-to-energy
  • Bio- and “compostable” plastics
  • Plastic (and carbon) credits

Matt Peryman (APPA Communications Manager) and Abdul Ghofar (WALHI) are currently co-convening monthly Zoom sessions – the last 3 of which will occur on 24 January, 28 February, and 28 March at 7-8pm NZDT.

All APPA members are welcome to join via the following link:

We have some wonderful Marine Studies postgrad students and plastic pollution researchers from the University of the South Pacific who are looking for mentors, supervisors, and general support. Can you help? Click here to learn more about the students and their research.

These University of South Pacific students located in Marine Studies are looking for thesis mentors, supervisors, and/or publishing support from APPA members with shared research interests. If you are interested in connecting with any of these exceptional scientists (in your capacity as student researcher or research supervisor) to share relevant literature, methodological or analytical approaches, lab protocols, to compare data across the region, or just to talanoa about the thrills and spills of research and publication in your shared field, Trisia would be very happy to connect you – T.Farrelly@massey.ac.nz.

On Friday 9 August 2019, Minister Eugenie Sage MP announced the Government will be consulting on a proposal to declare a range of problematic waste streams “priority products”, by the end of this year. This would mean that a product stewardship scheme for those products MUST be developed. The proposed products are:

  • Tyres
  • Electrical and electronic products
  • Agrichemicals and their containers
  • Refrigerants
  • Farm plastics
  • Packaging (including single-use plastic packaging and beverage packaging).

Product stewardship schemes make those who design, manufacture, sell, use and dispose of a product responsible for ensuring the product is effectively reduced, reused, recycled or recovered, and for managing any harm that product causes when it becomes waste. Such schemes can take the burden off consumers, councils and the environment to manage the harmful and costly effects of unregulated products.

This consultation is a big deal and could mean big strides forward in reducing plastic pollution in Aotearoa. You can check out the consultation document and submission form on the Ministry for the Environnment website. Submissions are open until 4 October 2019 and we encourage everyone to make a submission.

If you feel like you need more information to help you submit, check out these resources produced by members of APPA:
